VIETNAM'S EQUITIZATION
In Vietnam, the privatization of state owned companies is called "equitization".
More than 3,000 State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) have been privatized by the end of 2005:
§ Privatization has mostly happened in small or unprofitable companies;
§ The only large privatization so far: a dairy company with market capitalization of around $1 billion (Vinamilk).
Another 600 companies are expected to be privatized in 2006, and 1,505 planned to be privatized by 2010.
The largest privatizations are just starting:
§ Typical large SOEs are in energy (power plants, electricity distribution), oil and gas, telecommunication, financial services;
§ All state-owned banks are planned to be privatized by 2008;
§ The country’s biggest and second biggest mobile phone operators are planned to be privatized in 2007-2008.
